Most people know that you can't draft on the bike portion of a USAT sanctioned Ironman race.
Part 1
What is the legal distance that must be observed when riding behind another racer and/or passing another race. I'm looking for two numaric answers.
Hint: The answer is a a rectangular area defined in a metric distance.
Part 2
Now for the hard part. There are 3 exceptions to the drafting rule. What are they?
His answer was correct:
The drafting box is 7 meters long and 2 meters wide (starting at the front of the front wheel for the length part). By the way, it's 30 meters long and 15 meters wide for moving vehicles.
1) 15 seconds for passing
2) When reducing speed for safety, aid stations, etc
3) If the rule is suspended for a specific portion of the race (by the officials)
Sometimes, reading big rules manuals has a benefit.

“The original bike course was based on the Around-Oahu Bike Race (115 miles; originally a two-day event).
Commander Collins calculated that, by shaving 3 miles off the course and riding counter-clockwise around the island, the bike leg could start at the finish of the Waikiki Rough Water and end at the Aloha Tower, the traditional start of the Honolulu Marathon.
The marathon is 26.2 miles because the starting point for the 1908 Olympic marathon in London was modified so that the Royal Family could have a good view and the length happened to be 42.195 km (26 miles 385 yards). The distance for the marathon was arbitrary in most races until the IAAF selected this distance as the standard.”
