ITU announces host cities for Multisport World Championships in 2014 and 2015

Vancouver, Canada (October 31, 2012) - The International Triathlon Union (ITU) today announced a trio of host cities for three Multisport World Championships in 2014 and 2015.  The 2014 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships were awarded to Zittau, Germany. In 2015, the ITU Duathlon World Championships will be hosted by Adelaide, Australia, while the ITU Long Distance Triathlon will be held in Motala, Sweden.
 
"Multisports are an integral part of our organisation," said Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member. "They provide an important avenue to grow our sport amongst an international audience. We are excited to bring these championships to new cities in countries with rich histories of hosting races."

Gomez and Paterson win XTERRA World Championship in Hawaii

Kapalua, Hawaii (October 28, 2012) - A tsunami warning for the Hawaiian Islands was canceled early on Sunday morning, and then Javier Gomez Noya and Lesley Paterson went out and stormed the competition at the 2012 XTERRA World Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on the island of Maui.

Gomez Noya was the overall winner, completing the course (1.5-kilometer swim, 30K mountain bike, 10K trail run) in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 50 seconds.  The 29-year-old from Spain followed up his silver medal performance at the 2012 Olympics with an impressive victory in his inaugural XTERRA appearance.

Paterson was the top female, not only repeating her accomplishment of a year ago, but bettering it. She finished with a time of 2:44:11, which was nearly two minutes faster than her winning time of a year ago.

A capacity – and XTERRA World Championship record – field of 750 athletes from around the world participated in the event, which was held on Maui for the 17th consecutive year.

The XTERRA World Championship is Sunday at 9am Hawaii time (3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney).  All pros will be wearing a GPS tracking device that reports location, speed, distance, and elevation.  Pros will put the GPS tracking belt on at the swim-to-bike transition so you should see their “shadows” moving once they get on the bike around 9:20am.  To watch you can download a free app for the iPhone or just go to www.xterralive.com.

The XTERRA World Championship is indeed global.

More than 700 athletes representing more than 30 countries and 42 states are entered in the 2012 XTERRA World Championship off-road triathlon, which is scheduled for Sunday, October 28, at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, on the island of Maui.

Perhaps no other entrants can appreciate it more than professional triathletes Ben Allen and Jacqui Slack. For starters, Allen is from North Wollongong, Australia, and Slack is from Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom.

ITU President Marisol Casado and ITU Secretary General Loreen Barnett win re-election

Auckland, New Zealand (October 22, 2012) - At the 25th ITU Congress in Auckland, Marisol Casado of Spain has been re-elected as President of the International Triathlon Union (ITU), earning another four-year term. Loreen Barnett of Canada has also won another 4-year term after being re-elected as Secretary General of ITU, ensuring that ITU remains the only International Federation in the Olympic Games with women at the top two leadership roles.
 
In the Vice-President race, Antonio Alvarez of Mexico, Sarah Springman of Great Britain and Bill Walker of Australia were all re-elected.

2013 ITU World Triathlon Series schedule unveiled

Auckland, New Zealand (October 22, 2012) - After crowning Lisa Norden (SWE) and Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) as the 2012 ITU World Champions this past weekend, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) today announced the schedule for the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series.
 
Emerging from the excitement of the highly successful London 2012 Olympic Games, the 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series visits eight cities in four continents as the world's top triathletes compete head-to-head to be crowned the 2013 ITU World Champion.
 
Entering its fifth season, triathlon's premier global series features eight rounds of race action, culminating with the Grand Final on the 2012 Olympic course in Hyde Park, London.

Gomez tops Brownlee but GBR keeps ITU World Championship crown

Auckland, New Zealand (October 21, 2012) - Spain's Javier Gomez claimed the ITU Grand Final victory in one of the best series finishes to date with a thrilling sprint over Great Britain's Jonathan Brownlee. But Brownlee was crowned the 2012 ITU Triathlon World Champion after finishing atop the ITU World Triathlon Series rankings.
 
Sven Riederer finished third in the Grand Final race, but Dmitry Polyanskiy's seventh spot was enough to secure him third in the series overall.

Lisa Norden takes the win at 2012 ITU World Championships

Auckland, New Zealand (October  21,2012) - Germany's Anne Haug took the ITU Grand Final title but Sweden's Lisa Norden the 2012 ITU World Championship in an action packed day of international action in Auckland on Saturday.
 
Non Stanford (GBR) was the first world champion to be crowned on Saturday as she outlasted the Netherlands' Sarissa De Vries and Canada's Joanna Brown in the Under23 women's championship.
 
Then Haug stormed home to cap off her breakthrough season with a Grand Final win, ahead of Gwen Jorgensen (USA) and Barbara Riveros Diaz (CHI). But Norden's fourth place was enough to secure the overall 2012 gold, with Haug winning silver and Andrea Hewitt (NZL) bronze.
