An experienced triathlete has died after taking part in the Vineman 70.3 Ironman triathlon last weekend.
50-year-old Margaret Hinsdale Pometta died at Sebastopol's Palm Drive Hospital this week after she was pulled from the Russian River during the swim portion of the Vineman 70.3 Ironman triathlon.
Doctors say that Pometta suffered a cardiac arrest during the race.
“She's done triathlons in Hawaii, everywhere,” said her sister Therese Block. “We're shocked. Shocked.”
This is the third year I'm deep in training for the GORE-TEX Trans Rockies Run and I must admit, its about this time of my program that I'm reminded how much I love trail running. My running career started in school track and field, with sprints, 400 meters and then progressing to 800 meter events. I ran my first marathon aged 18 and over the years have competed in many road races.
Generally the preparation for these races was long and brutal, especially having to train through the winter for the Boston Marathon in April. I got so bored with running on pavement, icy sidewalks in winter and dodging vehicles as they drifted across the road in a text induced funk. I had to resort to running with music, friends, dogs and almost any distraction I could find, to make it through those bone jarring training runs and do the requisite mileage.

Hamburg, Germany - ITU triathlon returns to Hamburg for the 10th year in a row this year, as a host of London-bound athletes get ready for a fast and furious sprint in their final pre-games preparation. However it's not all about Olympics fever, as this race marks the second half of this year's WTS series.
With only Stockholm, Yokohama and the Auckland Grand Final to come, the battle for world title points is starting to get serious. Hamburg has hosted a World Cup event since 2002, and the ITU World Championships in 2007, before coming on board as in the first year of the ITU World Triathlon Series in 2009.

The world's largest iron distance triathlon and flagship of the Challenge Family global series of iron distance triathlons, Challenge Roth, has sold out in record time for 2013.
When entries went on sale yesterday, 16 July at 10.00am, 650 relay team slots sold out in 29 minutes, 1,500 international slots sold out in 75 minutes and the remaining German slots sold out in 53 minutes in the fastest sell out seen for a European iron distance triathlon.

With the popularity of adventure- and stage-race formats on the rise, you may find yourself, for the first time, considering a team race experience. Many of these events require you to complete the entire distance with at least one other person (i.e. not a relay), and finish together. Here are a few tips on how to team up so that you have a successful race (and still like each other at the end of it).
Selection
A race is not a Vegas roadtrip. Don't yell out at your next gathering "who wants to do ___ with me", and pick the person who high-fives you and says "hell yes I'll go". Your entry fee is much better spent if you choose:
someone of similar ability. Your pace should be within a reasonable range of your partner's, and you should be equally comfortable in the race environment (e.g. terrain).
Someone who has similar expectations for both the journey and the outcome. If you are soaking in the scenery, you don't want a Type A partner throwing rocks at you. In other words, someone who would like to win their age group should not pair with someone who will be happy to finish.
An apparently angry otter attacked and bit a women triathlete in a Northern Minnesota lake.
Leah Prudhomme, 33, of Anoka Minnesota was bitten 25 times by an Otter as she was training for a local triatrhlon.
According to the Associated Press:
"Leah Prudhomme, 33, of Anoka, was doing a regular 1.5-mile training swim in Island Lake, 17 miles north of Duluth, on Wednesday evening. As she passed by a bog on the last stretch, she felt something bite her ankle to the bone: an otter."
“It had a gray head, little beaded eyes, and was very agile in the water. … It would just like latch onto my leg and latch onto my thigh,” Prudhomme said.

Tiszaujvaros, Hungary (July 15, 2012) The day belonged to France in the men's race, as they controlled the course from start to finish in the finals of the Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup. Aurelien Raphael opened the day with the fastest swim, while teammate Pierre Le Corre closed it out for his first ITU World Cup victory.
Le Corre crossed over the finish line first, followed shortly thereafter by Raphael and Anthony Pujades for a French sweep of the podium.
"We are very glad to win today," Le Corre said. "The French team on the podium, it's fantastic."
Swift swimmer Raphael, who posted the top swim time in semifinals on Saturday, again set the pace on the swim, leading his teammates out of the water first. Pujades and Le Corre were not far behind, sitting in second and fifth, respectively.

Tiszaujvaros, Hungary (July 15, 2012) - The first ITU World Cup contested in an innovative semifinals and finals format was highlighted by a French podium sweep and Australia's Ashleigh Gentle out-dueling a surprising threat for the title.
Elite Women's Review
In a tight battle for gold, Ashleigh Gentle (AUS) claimed her second career World Cup title with a win at the Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup. Maaike Caelers (NED), who collected silver, pushed Gentle to the end, giving the crowd an exciting finish.
Annamaria Mazzetti (ITA) rounded out the top three, but not without a fight from Charlotte McShane (AUS).
The excitement in Tiszaujvaros began Saturday with the women's semifinals. The top 25 women across two waves advanced to finals on Sunday. The athletes completed the same three-lap 750m swim, but encountered a new six-lap 20km bike and three-lap 5km race the second day of competition.

July 14, 2012 (Beaver Creek Resort - Avon, CO) Since she started racing XTERRA in 2004 Danelle Kabush has won XTERRA’s in Canada, had two kids, finished 2nd at the XTERRA World Championships twice (top five four times) but until today had never made it to the top step of the podium at a major XTERRA in the U.S.
“It’s very satisfying,” said Kabush, who earned a doctorate degree in sports psychology. “It’s always a tough course going uphill all day but it’s so scenic and beautiful I really enjoyed myself. I had a really fun battle with Sara out there on the bike, congrats to her and everyone else who raced. The volunteers were awesome, and so was the crowd with so many cheers all along the course. It’s fun to be back here after three years away.”

July 14, 2012 (Beaver Creek Resort - Avon, CO) - Conrad Stoltz, 38, of Stellenbosch, South Africa and Danelle Kabush, 36, of Calgary, Canada won the XTERRA Mountain Championship at Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colorado this morning.
For Stoltz, not altitude, not a bear, not even Josiah Middaugh - a mountain master on his home course - could disrupt his perfect 2012 season. Stoltz started the year with a win at the XTERRA South Africa Championship, then swept through the XTERRA regional championships in Nevada, Alabama, Virginia, & now Colorado to bring his unprecedented XTERRA all-time championship wins total to 47.
It’s damn hot out there right now. If you’re stupid, I mean brave enough to peak out of your door or car long enough to get a workout in the heat and humidity of the summer, hopefully you are taking the proper precautions.
For those of us not able to consistently get out of bed in the early morning hours before work to avoid the heat and sun, then you have no option unless you’re getting all of your workouts at the gym or in your pain cave in the basement. It is heat and sun for you.

Tiszaujvaros, Hungary (13 July 2012) - With the London 2012 Opening Ceremony exactly two weeks away, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) today announced the official triathlon start lists for the London 2012 Olympic Games. In Hungary, ahead of this weekend's Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup, the 39 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) were randomly drawn, and then start numbers were assigned to their respective athletes in alphabetical order. While the start numbers indicate position in the transition area, they do not relate to athletes' position on the start pontoon.
Women
Chile was the first NOC drawn, meaning Barbara Riveros Diaz will wear No. 1 for the women. The reigning ITU Sprint Triathlon World Champion and 2011 Pan Am Games silver medallist is viewed as a serious podium threat and is seeking to be the first South American triathlete to medal at the Olympics. Great Britain was the seventh NOC drawn, meaning numbers 8, 9 and 10 are respectively assigned to the home team of Lucy Hall, Vicky Holland and reigning ITU World Champion Helen Jenkins.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND (July 13, 2012) -- IRONMAN Triathlon, one of the biggest names in triathlon worldwide, will stage a new annual IRONMAN 70.3 championship event in Auckland next January.
IRONMAN 70.3 Auckland will be designated as the official Asia Pacific Championships. This provides an additional opportunity for athletes to qualify for the annual IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship at Las Vegas, USA.
The race on Sunday 20 January 2013 will showcase iconic Auckland landscapes with a swim in the Viaduct Harbour, a bike course that includes the Auckland Harbour Bridge and a run along the Auckland waterfront.
