Editor's Note: Our friend and longtime cycling journalist James Raia recently had the chance to chat with U.S cycling champion George Hincapie before the start of this year's Tour de France. Of course we were the most curious if the former teammate of Lance Armstrong ever considered taking up the sport of triathlon. The answer to that simple question is below:
Question: When you retire, have you consider trying another sport, like triathlon?
George Hincapie:
I have a couple of bets rolling with my good buddies who are triathletes that I can beat them. But I would only do that for bragging rights. I don't have any interest in doing it on a serious level. I have some friends who are hardcore triathletes and I always give them a hard time and say maybe I can beat them, which I probably can't because I am a terrible swimmer and I am a terrible runner. But my favorite sport besides cycling is tennis. I used to play a ton of tennis with friends and I'll probably be doing a lot of that.
Question:
Are your friends Olympic distance triathletes or Ironman-distance athletes?
Both, actually. But I would have to do something short. I couldn't do anything long and I would only do it once, to shorten the misery.
