It was always just a matter of time before Competitor and the WTC went to war. Of course this is not a war fought with guns and bullets, but instead a war for the hearts, minds and wallets of Endurance athletes around the world.
Among other things the Competitor Group (CGI) puts on the hugely popular Rock 'n' Roll series of half and full marathons. BTW: In case you haven't noticed CGI has been on a buying spree lately.
The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) of course now owns and operates over a hundred triathlon races around world (read Ironman, 70.3 and 5150 races) so it was almost inevitable that the two giants in the endurance race event biz would go after the same customer...you.
With CGI’s TriRock Triathlon Series expanding (see today's press release below) and the WTC announcing new races while acquiring shorter ones....it was just a matter of time before all out war broke out.
We predict one of two outcomes in this brewing war that will direct impact you:
1) Entry fees to races will fall because of increased competion for your race dollars or....
2) Entry fees to races will increase when CGI buys the WTC or the WTC owners' (Providence Equity Partners) buys CGI.
San Diego, CA – Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the leading media and event resource in the active lifestyle industry, today announced the acquisition of the SBR Triathlon Series.
Entering its fifth year, the two-event series of USAT-sanctioned sprint triathlons kicks off this weekend in New York’s scenic Harriman State Park. The second event, scheduled for Saturday, August 13, 2011, will be rebranded as part of CGI’s TriRock Triathlon Series – TriRock New York presented by SBR.
“We are excited to bring the TriRock Series to the greater New York metro area and joining forces with a retail partner like SBR is a natural fit,” said Scott Dickey, President of CGI. “Both companies share a vision of pushing the sport of triathlon beyond its niche endurance reputation, while supporting the active and vibrant triathlon community in the Northeast.”
CGI organizes the 24-event Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and publishes both Triathlete Magazine and Inside Triathlon. The TriRock Series events have a fun and entertaining atmosphere, which is ideal for the beginner triathlete looking to get more experience as well as the seasoned athlete looking to test their speed in a short course race.
New York’s musical multisport mash-up will feature a ½ mile swim, 16 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. The event will include live bands along the swim, bike and run courses, followed by a post-race party and concert.
