ITU recognized TriStar race series

Vancouver, Canada (31 May 2011) - The International Triathlon Union (ITU) today announced it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Star Production SARL to officially recognise the distances of the TriStar series events into the ITU rules.  The TriStar races are made up of a 1km swim, 100km bike, 10km run and also a 2km swim, 200km bike, 20km run.                     

Star Production will organize TriStar races under the ITU Competition Rules while working with ITU's affiliated National Federations.  The distances will be officially recognized in ITU rules at the ITU Congress in Beijing this September.  

Belgium Rutger Beke set to retire from triathlon

Belgium triathlete Rutger Beke is ready to hang up his bike and running shoes.

According to European sports news web site Sporta, the 35-year old Ironman triathlete said, "I did not want to muddle through," and has put an end to his professional triathlon racing career.

Beke is perhaps best know for finishing in second place at the 2003 Ironman World Championships in Kona.

ITU World Championship Series heads to Madrid this weekend

In the men's field, the battle between Javier Gomez (ESP) and Alistair Brownlee (GBR) that almost materialised in Sydney is surely set to happen here, as series leader Gomez aims for his first Dextro Energy Triathlon Series win in Spain while Brownlee targets his third consecutive Madrid title.

In the women's field, series leader Paula Findlay (CAN) will wear the number one for the first time, and deservedly so after winning three of her last four Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series races she's contested. But there are a number of contenders who could knock either Gomez or Findlay off the top of the podium in Madrid.

The 2011 Bolder Boulder professional men's race took to the streets of Boulder, Colorado with half marathon record holder Ryan Hall running for team USA.

So how did Ryan Hall and team USA do at the 2011 Bolder Boulder?

Sp while it took the professional men just about 30 minutes to run the 10K...you can watch them cover the entire distance of the race in about 5 minutes in the video below.

The Bolder Boulder is one of the biggest running races in the United States with over 50 thousand people taking to the streets of Boulder, Colorado to test themselves against 10K and of course Boulder's altitude.

This year, 33rd running of the classic 10K race,  the Citizen's race was won by Jeremy Freed in a time of 30:38:17 while the women's citizen's race winner was 25-year-old Akane Mutazak (who lives and trains in Boulder) and crossed the finishline in 36:09.80.

But while it took both winners over 30 minutes to run the race this year you can watch the entire citizen's race below in just about six and half minutes.

Sylvain Sudrie and Eva Ledesma take Half Challenge Barcelona

Sylvain Sudrie (FRA) and Eva Ledesma (SPA) have taken out the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the third Half Challenge Barcelona. In hot and calm conditions, Sudrie successfully defended his 2010 title in 3:47:49 and led from the start, coming out of the water in 22:16, just 20 seconds ahead of Martin Jensen (DEN) and Stephen Bayliss (GBR) who exited together.

Sudrie managed to hold Jensen off on the bike, always just over a minute ahead. Jensen hung onto second place with a 2:30 lead over Herve Faure (FRA), Bayliss and Stephane (FRA). However, Faure’s fastest run split of the day of 1:16:55 saw him move into second place where he finished in 3:49:28 with Jensen in third.
 
The women’s race was very close from start to finish with Saleta Castro Nogueira leading out of the water in 26:58. She was closely followed by French competitors Juliette Benedicto and Delphone Pelletie, along with Ledesma and Lou Collins (GBR). It was these four who played cat and mouse throughout the bike.

If the third time is a charm what does winning Ironman Brazil for a fourth time mean?

Only Argentina's Eduardo Sturla must know as he won the race today for a fourth time in 8:15:03, beating the hard charging pack of runners including Guilherme Valenza Manocchio of Brazil who took second place...just two over minutes behind Sturla.

Chris McDonald from Tuscon, Arizona was the fastest America man, crossing the finishline in 5th place in a time of 8:26:24.

Doctor dies during the swim segment of Colorado triathlon

A Fort Collins, Colorado doctor died during the swim segment of the Pelican Fest Triathlon in Windsor today.

43-year-old Michael Wiggins was pronounced dead at the hospital after being spotted floating face down by people in a safety canoe in Windsor Lake just before 9 a.m.

“His leadership and compassion will be hard to replace,” said friend Dr. Edward Norman, in a Banner Health news release.

According to the Greely Tribune:

Wiggins "was pulled out of the water and given medical treatment on scene before being taken to Medical Center of the Rockies. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, Weld County Deputy Coroner Stacy Clodfelder said.

Clodfelder said authorities will know more about how Wiggins died after completing an autopsy scheduled for Sunday. Wiggins did have a heart condition, which may have contributed to his death," she said."

Video: American running champ Ryan Hall on training and triathlon

At the Boston Marathon this year Ryan Hall ran the fastest ever marathon by an American runner taking fourth in a time of 2:04:58. However, this was not an American record, since the Boston course is not eligible for records.

Hall is also the first American runner to officially break the one hour mark for the half marathon, and he holds the American half marathon record in a time of 59.43.

So how does Hall train to run so fast and will he ever race a triathlon?

XTERRA European Tour kicks off Sunday in Sardinia

The XTERRA European Tour kicks off Sunday on the island of Sardinia, just west of Rome, with the XTERRA Italy Championship. The managing director of the XTERRA World Tour, “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas, is on-site and brings us this report...

There was a big press conference in the village of Orosei today, where I met the new Mayor (who looks unbelievable like Marlon Brando's Godfather). The place was decked out with XTERRA signage everywhere and had Italian TV (Videolina), Sardinian TV (Sardegna Uno), newspapers, and freelance journalists en mass.

Seems XTERRA is the most important event in the region and one of the biggest draws in all of Sardinia. This year there are 500 athletes including teams - and the event was sold out a month ago. Renata Bucher and I represented the XTERRA World Tour and naturally I spoke perfect Italian for about seven seconds.

The race site is fabulous, the resort is gorgeous, and the trails and ocean are the best. I think it is probably unnecessary to mention the food and vino.

Lance Armstrong: 'I Never Failed One Of Those Shi***, Easy-To-Fool Doping Tests'...The Onion

If you ask us, it is about time that the satirical Onion newspaper took on the Lance Armstong doping story.

Thanks guys for poking a little bit of fun at what has mostly been a pretty sad story.

According to the Onion:

"Embattled seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong held a press conference this morning to sternly reiterate that during his career he passed every easy-to-mask, ineffective doping test he was ever given.

"Let me be entirely clear about this: I, like the hundreds of obviously juiced cyclists who also passed them, never failed one of those shi*** tests that you can basically learn how to beat by reading Internet message boards," Armstrong said.

Ryan races and reviews the 2011 Bikesource Du & Triathlon in Olathe, Kansas

The Bike Sources Duathlon and Triathlon is a well organized traditional event.  It's been there for years and is a good race for the first timer or someone looking to kick off the season to gage their ability thus far.

PERSONAL RECAP
Forecast Monday for Sunday race was sun and 70's.  By Friday the forecast was clouds and mid 50's.  Yikes.  I knew this one was going to hurt.  I train in the cold but swimming in the cold?  Not really.  Plus, I don't want a 15 minute T1 and T2 putting layers on so I knew I was going to have to bite the cold bullet.  They actually gave people the option to switch to the Duathlon but I was there for the triathlon and needed the whole experience for IM KS prep.
PRE RACE : Cold.  Cloudy.  Maybe 10 minutes of sunshine.

• No rain though!  Last year was chilly and semi-wet and the swim was cancelled due to poor water quality.  Last year was suppose to be a tri but turned into a du for all of us.
• Since I had number tats I only needed age group in the markings area.  Nice and smooth since I was like 5th to transition to open it up.
• It's relaxing there nice and early.  Chill.  Check out competition.  Drool over cool bikes.  Port-a-potty stops.  Sit back and relax.  Port-a-potty stops.  Check transition setup.  Port-a-potty stop.
• I did notice the demand for the john's was down.  Not sure if it was the weather or the times, but participation seemed low.

Indy car drivers Tony Kanaan & Vitor Meira heading to Kona

Here's an interesting question that you might be asking yourself?

How do you get to race the Ironman Triathlon in Kona? One answer might be to become a successful Indianapolis race car driver.

Today we got word that Indy car drivers Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira will be racing in Hawaii this October at the 2011 Ironman World Championships. Both men raced the at the Ironman 70.3 Championships last year with Tony Kanaan completing the half Ironman race in 5:06:43 while Vitor Meira finished in a very fast 4:47:18.

“For the pros it's about winning or losing, but for me and for Tony it’s about the competition with yourself -- to challenge yourself if you can and believe in yourself once you finish," said Meira, who will start on Row 4 for the Indianapolis 500 on May 29th.
