Editor's Note: In the last few days of 2010 we're pleased to feature some of the most interesting and noteworthy stories of the year. Today we start with a little race we covered way back in June in Kansas.

Chrissie Wellington was genuinely overjoyed as she crossed the finish line at the 2010 Ironman 70.3 Kansas triathlon.

BOA names Jonathan Brownlee 2010 Olympic triathlete of the year

The British Olympic Association (BOA) has named ITU triathlete Jonathan Brownlee as one of it's 2010 Olympic Athletes of the year.

According to published reports, "The award was introduced in 2005, to mark the BOA’s Centenary Year and the success of London being awarded the 2012 Olympic Games.

The BOA presented a trophy to each of the 33 summer and winter Olympic sports for them to award on an annual basis to their top performing athlete of the year and Brownlee has taken the award for triathlon."

"It’s absolutely great to win this award," Brownlee said. "For me it has been a great breakthrough year with winning the Sprint Distance and Under-23 world titles, as well as finishing on the podium at the World Championships Series event in Hyde Park."

Richmond to bid for 2015 UCI Road World Championships

Richmond, Va. (Dec. 22, 2010) – Mayor Dwight C. Jones today announced the city of Richmond’s desire to host the 2015 UCI Road World Championships. Richmond will represent the United States’ first bid for the event since it was held in Colorado Springs, Colo. in 1986. The nine-day event will award junior 17-18, U23 and elite road cycling and time trial world championships for both men and women.
 
The UCI Road World Championships attracts athletes from more than 70 nations across five continents and represents the most important road cycling event in the world for participating countries. More than 1,000 cyclists compete to wear the coveted world champion's "arc en ciel,” or rainbow jersey.

“Hosting the world championships in Richmond would be an amazing opportunity for American athletes to compete for the sport’s highest honor on their home soil,” said Kristin Armstrong, Olympic gold medalist and time trial world champion. “The event would offer the United States the opportunity to showcase the level of cycling we have on this side of the pond.”

The World Championships attract more than 300,000 onsite spectators and is viewed by a global television audience of more than 300 million people. The 2010 Championships, held in Melbourne, Australia, generated tens of millions of dollars in economic impact to the host city.

FYI: Lance Armstrong posted this photo to his twitter account a few years ago when he was training in Kona, Hawaii as part of his cycling career comeback.

As you can tell Lance is having a bit of laugh at all of the triathletes who were cycling the Ironman World Championship course.

But now that the seven time TdF winner is officially a triathlete again, perhaps this photo was just a bit of foreshadowing?

Winter running for dummies

If you’re a crazy year around outdoor runner, then you know that regardless of when the calendar says winter starts, it’s here! Be prepared with this series of tips for running in the cold.

Be Informed
Know what the forecast is. Weather forecasting isn’t an exact science, but you can definitely get a good idea for temperature, wind speeds and precipitation. If it’s snow, find your trail running shoes for better traction. If it’s freezing rain, you might want to consider a treadmill workout. Hour by hour can help you determine if you want to run in the morning, afternoon or evening. Wind chill is very important and turn a 30 degree day into 10 or 0 degree day. Wind chill can do more damage to exposed skin than still air at below freezing temperatures.

Footwear
Usually grabbing your trusty running shoes is a no-brainer. But, as mentioned above, if you have precipitation other than rain, you will need to consider something with better traction. Trail running shoes can give you better traction, better insulation and moisture resistance. If you live up north and 12 to 14 inches of snow on the ground is the norm, consider something as extreme as Yak Trax for superior traction.

New trend: American Football players wearing triathlon wetsuits to stay warm

Apparently it all began with Patriot's quarterback Tom Brady almost seven years ago.

In THIS recent story in the Boston Herald the superstar QB said he's been wearing a triathlon wetsuit since 2003 under his football gear to stay warm on those cold and snowy days that football fans just love.

But don't be fooled into thinking that Brady is wearing a full wetsuit, instead he's wearing the T1 First Wave which De Soto Sports, the wetsuit's manufacturer, calls a pullover. Just think of it as a sweater made of neoprene.

In Vail Colorado money talks and hit and run driver walks

Here's a bit of a EMT public service announcement:

If you happen to be in Vail, Colorado for heaven's sake don't ride a bike because if you happen to be struck and almost killed  by a wealthy driver who is temporarily overcome by the 'new car smell' of his Mercedes-Benz the prosecutor and judge won't be on your side.

In fact they won't be on the side of any person who happens to make the mistake of riding a bike in Vail, Colorado.

This week in an Eagle, Colorado court room District Court Judge Frederick Gannett and Deputy District Attorney Mark Brostrom once again proved that when you get on a bike on bike in America you take your life in your own hands, and of course forfiet the full protection of the law.

Prominent Denver wealth manager Marty Erzinger was senteced to, "one year of probation and 90 days in jail for running down cyclist Dr. Steven Milo with his new car and then leaving the scene of the accident," according to the Vail Daily.

I've been fortunate enough to meet and watch Chrissie race in two Ironman distance events:  Kona in 2009 and Arizona in 2010.  It was during the week leading up to Kona in 2010 I met and followed her through her registration process.  The picture above is right after our interview.   What I find remarkable about Chrissie, besides her genuine and compassionate personality, she has never lost an Ironman race that she has started.  If you haven't heard, Chrissie made a last minute decision not to race in Kona this year due to an illness.   The 2009 runner up, Mirinda Carfrae took first place this year.   It would have been very interesting to see those two athletes battle it out.  Next year.

Below is the list of every Ironman race Chrissie has entered and won.  She's 10 for 10!   That's mind boggling considering all the factors that can influence an athletes performance; course and weather conditions, individual fitness level, nutrition, mechanical issue and of course the competition.

The pros and cons of winter treadmill workouts

With Old Man Winter upon us forcing temperatures in the teens and wind chills near 0 degrees, the treadmill has become a friend of convenience for many endurance athletes.

Some athletes loath the treadmill so much they brave sub zero temperatures and dawn multiple layers of clothing to shiver and shuffle their way through a run.

Other athletes welcome the treadmill workout and even use it when the weather is perfect for running. Whatever your reason, here’s a list of pros and cons.

Mercedes-Benz 'new car smell' blamed for disturbing Vail hit and run accident

You may recall THIS disturbing story our sister blog reported earlier this year from Vail, Colorado where District Attorney Mark Hurlbert offered a hit and run driver who struck a cyclist a deal to plead guilty to two misdemeanor counts, while dropping a more serious felony charge.

It all started on July 3rd when 34-year-old New York physician Steven Milo went for a bike ride in Vail, Colorado.

Allegedly 52-year-old Denver based money manager Martin Joel Erzinger (picture here), who owns a home in Vail and manages more than $1 billion in assets for wealthy clients for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, struck Milo from behind with his Mercedes and left the scene of the accident.

After a public outcry and protests by Milo's attorneys, the felony charge was refiled in October.

The latest news in this continuing and disturbing story is just as strange.

According to the Vail Daily Erzinger's attorneys now blame sleep apnea combined with the Mercedes-Benz "new car smell" as the reason for him striking the Milo and driving away from the scene of the collision:
