Do you remember the very first Ironman tag line?
If we can still recall it correctly it went something like this, "Swim 2.4 miles, Bike 112 miles and Run 26.2 miles and brag for the rest of your life!"
Today at Ironman Arizona in Tempe we may have just witnessed the birth of a new race distance: The Tinman.
Officially the race was a way that Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman used to promote the upcoming IMAZ race and of course his town.
Check out the video below. Hallman challenged the members of the media a "mini-triathlon" and called it the "Tin Man Challenge".
The above photo was posted to Twitter by Paul Newby Fraser with the comment, "IM AZ Mayor's Challenge - fast transitions R key - put on all your gear start to finish!"
She also posted the photo below with the comment, "...and level the playing field - standard high performance equipment for everyone."
But we think that the Tinman has a much wider appeal than just a "mini-triathlon".
It is after all a 24-yard swim, a 1.12-mile bicycle ride and a .26-mile run. Just think of the wonderful possibilities...instead of training for months on end for an Ironman race, you could knock out the Tinman triathlon over lunch.
No more long hours of painful training away from work, your loved ones and your family. Instead all you need, besides the gear of course, is a tiny lake and one block around your hood.
So with that in mind here's our official suggestion for the new Tinman triathlon race tag line:
"Swim 24-yards, bike 1.12 miles, run .26 miles and brag that you have time left over for lunch!"
Are you listening race directors? ;-)
BTW: The AZ Tinman was won by "Eric Jelinek with the College Times News, who also won in 2007 and 2008. He got $1,000 to give to his favorite charity," according to KTAR.com. Click through to KTAR.com to also watch the fun video by former race winner Tim Hacker.
What do you think? Is the Timan a race you'd be willing to do. Please let us know in the comments below.
