Not only is Barack Obama the first African American U.S. President, but he also becomes the third leftie United States President in a row, and the fifth out of the last seven U.S. Presidents to take the oath as a Southpaw.
Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Gerald Fold were all left-handed presidents. Barack Obama and John McCain are also both left-handed.
Only about 10 percent of the world’s population is left-handed, and yet about 66 percent of American presidents in the last 30 years were left-handed men.
So what is it about being left handed that correlates to leadership in the United States?
Many studies have shown that "Generally, Southpaws are thought to be more flexible, highly intelligent, and more resilient than right-handed people."
Researchers have also discovered that lefties are more likely to earn more money. An Australian study has shown that lefties think more quickly when playing computer games and sports.
Many scientists agree the
left-handers could have a sporting advantage, but think it is not
simply a question of speed. Some American researchers think that
left-handers may actually possess enlarged right hemispheres, giving
them superior spatial skills according to the web site Anything Left Handed.
Does President Obama posses superior sports skills? We know he's good at basketball, but weather his southpaw status gives him an endurance advantage is unknown.
And interestingly researchers in Canada have also concluded that left handed people have an increased likelihood (at least when compared to right handed people) toward homosexuality.
According to the web site Suite101com lefties tend more toward:
- Independence: Some experts believe left-handed people are more independent because they’ve had to get along in a world that’s not made for them. Dr Peters says that lefties are “slightly more resistant to social pressures, to have more of an independent streak.”
- Adaptability: Canadian research shows that left-handed people are more adaptable than right-handed people. That is, a lefty can use her right hand to do tasks much easier than a righty can use his hand. Left-handed people seem to be able to switch over more easily.
