Crazy Hard Races: 4 Deserts Update Stage #5

All this week we'll be keeping you updated on the third leg of the 4 Deserts race. Runners from around the world are taking on the grueling Sahara Desert in Egypt over a period of six stages.

Stage 5 Course:
At long last, competitors who are still in the competition will face the 95 - 100 kilometer (50 - 60 mile) “Stage 5” which takes competitors from the White Desert to the heart of the Black Desert. The terrain is lunar like, with many plateaus to traverse. A strong mind and limitless endurance will be the key to survival on this stage which is simply flat out and stony for most of the way.

Why some athletes get injured more easily

Have you ever wondered why some athletes get injured even though they do all of the right things like pre and post exercise stretching, while others who never stretch---never get injured?

Exercise scientists say they have a few answers that can help with some common injuries. But all too often injuries remain a mystery and people may have to figure out how much exercise is too much for themselves and what sort of routines tend to produce injuries.

“We don’t have enough definitive evidence to say, ‘This causes an injury and even if you don’t have an injury you should change it,’ ” said Stephen Messier, who directs the biomechanics lab at Wake Forest University. Much of the work focuses on running injuries. But the same principles apply to swimming, tennis, bicycling or basketball.

Ironman Florida Turns 10 Tomorrow

Several thousand athletes will dive into the salty waters of the Gulf of Mexico tomorrow as Ironman Florida turns 10-years-old.

"People look at Florida as a legitimate Ironman," said Spencer Smith, the 2001 champion. "They look at it now as ‘Well, I'm going to do Ironman Florida instead of I'm going to Hawaii.' People don't question it."

The World Anti-Doping Agency considers banning Viagra

The World Anti-Doping Agency is looking at the possibility of banning Viagra as a drug that can help athletes perform better on the field as well as in the bedroom.

Marywood University researchers should provide WADA officials with the results of a WADA-funded study by the end of the year, according to Kenneth Rundell, a respiratory researcher at the Scranton, Pa. school.

A WADA committee will review the research this spring; WADA's executive committee will determine at its September 2009 meeting if the erectile dysfunction drug should be added to its 2010 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods.

The Future: 50,000 runners in New York’s marathon

New York city race director Mary Wittenberg, and New York’s deputy mayor for economic development, Robert C. Lieber, have discussed expanding the field of the upcoming marathon to 50,000 runners, according to a recent story in the New York Times.

My Ironman Checklist by Kona Shelly

For everyone racing Ironman Florida this weekend, here's Kona Shelly's IM checklist:

1. Arrive in town.

2. Find over-priced accommodations you are staying a minimum of four nights at.

3. Unpack bicycle, spread gear around room randomly.

4. Attempt to reassemble bicycle, realize you forgot to mark your seat and handlebar position before disassembly. Guess position and tell yourself it won’t make a big difference.

5. Drive bike course at slow speeds while making wrong turns. Annoy locals.

6. Find swim venue. Put wetsuit on, stand around for 15 minutes. Swim 10 minutes, take wetsuit off. Look around to see if you impressed anyone.

"The memory will be tarnished," Marion Jones

Disgraced U.S. sprinter Marion Jones will admitted in a tear-filled taped interview with talk show host Oprah Winfrey later today that, using banned drugs and being sent to jail for lying about it had tarnished her Olympic memory.

"It wasn't as difficult to give back the medals because it's not about the hardware," the 33-year-old tells Winfrey in a taped interview.  "But it's the memory that will be tarnished."

Stage 3 Course:

Stage 3 is the beginning of what is called “Hamada” in the Bedouin language or “flat out” in English. Competitors will be in an area where only sand is in sight, leading to a dune section known for its harsh and unforgiving winds. The area resembles a paradise with no water. The distance is 37.5 kilometers (23.4 miles).
