Frank Shorter - The Olympian
"For a moment in time on September 9, 1972 I was the luckiest person in the world. I was standing on the awards podium, inside the track and field stadium at the Olympic Games in Munich Germany, gazing through a blur of mild shock and tears, trying to focus on the American flag.
Avery Brundage, the President of the International Olympic Committee had just placed a gold medal around my neck, and, as I watched the American flag rise to the top of the center flag pole, I was singing the National Anthem. I wish every young athlete could experience this kind of moment just once."
Recently I had the chance to sit down with Frank Shorter, the 1972 Munich Olympic Gold Medal Marathon winner, and chat about running, training for triathlon, and drugs in professional sports as well as his new book.
While Frank retired from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) in 2003, where he’d served as its Chair since its creation in 2000, he remains active as its spokesperson.
