What's new: iPhone Pele App race analyzer

Editor's Note: What's new is a new feature on EMT where we bring you interesting new gear, services and products that we found of interest for endurance athletes.

Pele is a race analyzer and athlete tracker for iPhone/iPad. It not only provides invaluable tools to make spectating more enjoyable; it makes searching for race results a breeze and it keeps your results handy. Currently supported races are Ironman, Ironman 70.3, and the Boston Marathon.
 
Back in 2008 at Ironman Wisconsin, I supported 5 of my friends on their quest to become an Ironman. I wanted to snap as many pictures as possible for them.  I created a big chart to keep track of who would be where based on their estimated times. Using the awkward web athlete tracker on my smartphone I updated the chart on the fly to run around like a maniac to find a good supporting spots. It was extremely stressful trying to keep track of everyone on my paper chart. I thought there must be a program to make supporting athletes easier for everybody but my search returned – nothing. The idea for Pele was born.
 
To address the two different kinds of target groups, Pele has to do the following:

Relive the 2010 Ironman World Championships today

With just about 24 hours before the start of the 2011 Ironman World Championships...you can relive the 2010 race today.

Our cameras followed all of the action before, during, and after the race. Not only did we capture the best triathletes in the world racing for the most prestigious title in the world, but just as importantly we were filming during the parade of nations, the annual underwear run, the awards ceremony after the race, and of course those magic minutes as 17 hours clicked down to those magic minutes before midnight.

Bicycling Magazine turns 50 and celebrates with Eddy Merckx

Our friends at Bicycling Magazine are celebrating their 50th B-day and to make it really special they've put together a 50th Anniversary issue hitting newsstands next week (Oct. 4), stacked with some of the best stories and photography they've ever attempted.

Who’s Who at the LA Marathon

Run it away, run it away, run it away now!  Apparently, eating nothing but Big Mac’s and playing bass in a popular 90’s band is a gateway to running a marathon.

Remember The Red Hot Chili Peppers?  Remember when they hit the music scene?  I may have just dated myself but when I saw what went down at the LA marathon last weekend, my jaw hit the floor.

Tawnee Prazak previews the upcoming Desert Triathlon

What are you doing this weekend? Why not head over to the Palm Desert area where triathletes will gather to “dust of the cobwebs” at The Desert Triathlon. The early-season race, now in its 12th year, is bigger than ever this time around, with events on both Saturday and Sunday, March 5-6. “We sold out very early before, so this year we made it a two-day event to accommodate more people and to keep it safer,” said race director Greg Klein, of Klein and Clark Sports LLC.

A sprint triathlon and duathlon will take place on Saturday, and the international distance triathlon will be Sunday (scroll down for the distances of each race). “The international race is a great tune-up for Ironman California 70.3, the Wildflower races and others,” said Klein. “There will be about 1,000 people doing the international this year.”
