Lance Armstong's Ironman race series debut on U.S. soil at the Lonestar 70.3 in Galveston, Texas was the big news of the weekend, but his 7th place finish--dropping a spot in the final steps of the race--showed everyone that the hot, humid and breezy conditions took a toll on all the participants.
Timothy O'Donnell won the event in 3:47:40 after coming up short the two past years. Sebastian Kienle pushed himself to the limit for his second-place finish, collapsing after crossing the line 23 seconds after O'Donnell.
As expected, Armstrong made his move on the bike, but couldn't pull away from the elite pro ranks. He told the Houston Chronicle that he was shooting for a 3-minute gap off the bike, but had to make do with 41 seconds. He seemingly had 6th-place locked up but Jordan Jones,
We went off on a tangent about nutrition and all of the choices out there a few weeks ago. EMT even posted about SIX Nutrition recently. Choices choices… Nutrition isn’t the only overwhelming aspect of triathlons and endurance racing facing today’s athlete.
Nike, Adidas, Asics and more have more running shoes to choose from than I have toes (I’m still at 10, but less on remaining toenails).
(March 29) Just got this press release from USAT with good news for those following the drama leading up to the Olympic Triathlon.
SAN DIEGO, Calif.* - Multisport enthusiasts and sports fans nationwide will witness the excitement of world-class triathlon firsthand when Universal Sports televises the second and final qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team - the ITU World Triathlon San Diego, which will be held May 11-12.
In 1941, a handful of scientists got together to create what is known as the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA). These were considered to be sufficient to meet the requirements of 97–98% of healthy individuals in every demographic in the United States. But the reality is that active males need more than what the government of 1941 thought was adequate. Hence SIX for MEN, a vitamin supplement pack from SIX Nutrition designed specifically for highly active men.
A great new blog, fifthquarterblog.com, reached out to EverymanTRI and offered to share this fantastic profile and video of American Olympic hopeful Jillian Peterson. The video is from 2008, but the profile updates Peterson's quest to make the London Games.
(March 26) A Reuters reports that Australian Emma Snowsill, the gold medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Olympics may not even make the team this year after she had to withdraw from last weekend's World Cup race in Mooloolaba in Queensland due to a stomach issue.
In a lead up to this year's summer Olympics in London, every race becomes a critical piece of the selection process. Miss too many races or withdraw from the more competitive ones, and a triathlete's chances of making their respective country's Olympic squads grow dimmer.
Rob Higley is a somewhat well-known running guru from the Rift Valley in Kenya Africa.
He's been coaching runners (including world-class runners) in Africa for over 20-years.
So he knows a thing or two about running with and without shoes.
In this video (at about 4:20) Higley gives what may be the best explanation yet as to why some African runners are so much better at running without shoes than their Western counterparts.
What are the critical principles of natural running, or in other words how can you run faster, longer, and not get injured?
These are the principles that this video explores and goes into in depth. If you have ever been curious how and why the "natural" running style is so popular with so many runners...just click play above.
Do you think that it is even possible run 7 marathons in 7 continents in just 5 days? Keep in mind that's only 120 hours in total to cover 183.4 miles of running.
The answer is yes.
Irish Ultramarathon runner Richard Donovan just did it.
Check out the video interview below as he explains how he managed to not only run 7 marathons in 7 continents in just 5 days, but also keep enough food down to make this feat possible.
Nike this week launched a new running shoe for the 2012 Olympics that weighs a mere 160g (5.6 ounces) for a size 9.
That's very light and in fact 19% lighter than the "Nike Zoom Streak 3, a shoe worn by first, second and third place athletes in the men’s marathon at the 2011 World Championships," according to Nike.
The new shoe technology called Nike Flyknit, uses "yarns and fabric variations are precisely engineered only where they are needed for a featherweight, formfitting and virtually seamless upper," says Nike
Let me start off by saying how much I appreciate your continued support of Masters running (although something has to be done about the age-grading crap). Staging championship events at multiple disciplines allows for competitive fields all year round and gives people an opportunity to excel at their best/favorite events. Particularly, placing the Masters cross country championships in conjunction with the Open and Junior championships, provides a full day of fun for racers and spectators.
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Cross Country championships in St. Louis. Kudos to the organizing committee, they staged an excellent race.
The host hotel was convenient to the race site. The staff was accommodating. We really enjoyed the free breakfast.
I realize the weather is beyond the control of mere humans, but… It was deplorable! When I woke up race morning and walked outside, I saw that it snowed over night.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. – Paul Sarris, age 34 of Aliso Viejo, won the 16th annual Surf City USA Marathon in a time of 2:30:07. Competing in his first-ever marathon, Sarris finished more than seven minutes ahead of runner up Gray Augustus (age 26 from Ammon, ID). “Surf City was a great event,” said Sarris. The volunteers were everywhere and very helpful. The whole experience was amazing.”
California’s largest combined oceanfront marathon and half-marathon featured more than 20,000 pre-registered runners from all 50 states and 18 foreign countries. A crowd of more than 50,000 lined Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach for near-perfect racing conditions. An additional 50,000 spectators attended the Active Lifestyle Expo on Saturday.
You might think that the SH@# Ultrarunners say wouldn't be much different from the SH@# triathlete say, but you'd be very wrong.
Thanks to Dax Ross who sent us this video and wrote, "I'm a long-time reader of your blog and I'd love to share this video with your readers. I know it's an old meme, but there was a glaring absence of a running-related video."
OK swimmers, now it's your turn. We still of course need to know what SH@# Swimmers say....
