Chrissie Wellington calls BBC Sports Personality of the Year list 'Disgraceful'

It seems that Great Britain has no worthy female athletes this year...as least non that make the BBC's annual BBC Sports Personality top 10 list.

Every year sports writers in Britain nominated and vote for their Top Ten Sports Personalities of the year.

This year athletes like cycling's Mark Cavendish, and running's Mo Farah were selected into the BBC's top ten list.

Driver fined $42 for hitting and killing a cyclist in Kirkland Washington

An 18-year-old driver was fined $42 for hitting and killing a cyclist in Kirkland, Washington by local authorities.

John Przychodzen was riding his bike from work when he was struck by an 18-year-old driver of a pickup truck who veered sharply onto the shoulder of the road.

Kirkland police investigating the case concluded that the accident was a tragic accident, but an attorny for the victim's family says the teen driver struck Przychodzen twice.

"In fact, one of the witnesses claims after he was hit, he immediately yelled out, 'What the' -- before the truck struck him again and then ran over him," said, said Chris Davis, an attorney for Przychodzen's family.

Video: Three women injured cycling outside of Boulder, CO on U.S. 36 by SUV

Three female cyclist were injured yesterday morning cycling just outside of Boulder, Colorado on North bound U.S. 36...which is a very popular route for local triathlons such at the Ironman Boulder 70.3.

The women were riding in a line when a black SUV crossed the centerline from the Southbound lane and swerved into them.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera, "Albert Gehorsam, 52, of Boulder, was driving a Ford Escape southbound, toward Boulder, when he swerved across the oncoming lane into the shoulder, hitting all three cyclists, Cobler said.

Master Trooper S.S. Schwanke, who was at the accident scene, said it appeared that another southbound vehicle slowed down to turn right into a private drive, at which point Gehorsam swerved around that vehicle."

"We were just going out for a nice morning bike ride," she said 47-year-old Jane McConnell who was injured in the accident. "We were riding a road that is very popular with cyclists, and we were all in single file, well within the right shoulder.

Heidi Montag replaces plastic surgery with 14 hours a day of extreme exercise

"I've been working out from, like, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. for two months now. I've been working out really hard because I had this pool party and I was like, I have to be in shape," reality show star and plastic surgery poster child Heidi Montag recently told Us Weekly.

If you do the math that means that Montag is working out 14 hours per day.

And what form of extreme exercises has she been doing you might be asking yourself now?

"I've been running a lot, and I've been doing weights," she says.

Oldest man ever to attempt to summit Mt. Everest dies at Camp One

82-year-old Shailendra Kumar Upadhyaya died yesterday during an attempt to become the oldest person ever to summit Mt. Everest.

The former Nepalese foreign minister died at around 4:00 p.m. Monday at camp one according to government officials.

Fox News is reporting that:

"Upadhyaya had said he wanted to raise awareness about the capabilities of elderly people by scaling the world's highest peak, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of mountaineers.

If he had succeeded, Upadhyaya would have become the oldest person to reach the top of Everest, beating current record holder Min Bahadur Sherchan, who scaled the mountain at the age of 76 three years ago."

Sudden cardiac arrest a rare but real life threatening concern for runners and triathletes

Although sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) or sudden cardiac death is not common amongst marathon and half marathon runners, a recent cluster in such deaths has attracted considerable media attention and evoked concern over the safety of long distance running and the health benefits associated with it.

Perhaps the most high profile marathon death in recent years was that of top American runner Ryan Shay  who collapsed and died in November 2007 while competing in the US Olympic Trials marathon in Central Park.

His death was particularly shocking as he was an elite runner and marathon veteran, not a first timer or someone who hadn’t trained enough, leaving many people thinking if it could happen to him it could happen to anyone. (Subsequent tests showed Shay died of a heart attack due to a pre existing enlarged heart.

Walking the fine line between divorce and triathlon

He’s not divorced, yet, but he’s walking a fine line. The article probably touches a nerve for a lot of athletes, whether they are professional, elite or an age grouper. What’s the right balance for your passion of triathlon and family? Some athletes have such a drive for the sport they give up time with loved ones, put their diet under a microscope, and shun their friends in the quest for that sub-10 hour Ironman or top 3 age group placement.

The hard truth: all too often cyclists and runners are moving targets for motorists

No athlete training outdoors wants to think about it, but the cold hard truth is that .

Maybe more inadvertent than intentional, but cars versus cyclists or runner is a no win situation.

On January 8, 2011, in Olathe, KS, a woman was hit by a car and critically injured. She was wearing running clothing and assumingly out for a morning run when she was struck by a car. The police reported they could not identify her at the scene and had to issue alerts to try and contact loved ones. She was reported hit at 8:30am and her identity was reported known by 5:30pm the same day. That’s a time lapse of 9 hours!

In Huntington Beach, CA, on January 9, 2011, a cyclist was hit after two cars crashed. You may think that’s not out of the ordinary for a cycle versus car accident, but the kicker in this story is the two cars crashed, tumbled down an embankment on to a pedestrian and bike trail and hit the cyclists as he happen to be riding by. He was riding on a designated trail and still could not avoid being hit by a car!

This weekend four 70.3 triathlon races were contested around the world...and as you can tell we didn't report the results.

Why?

Because we're not sure that you (our valued readers) really care about the results of so many races.

There are now enough 70.3 races that you could race one for every weekend of the year and still not race all of them.

There are also countless marathons and half marathons being held every weekend in the fall as we once again move into marathon running season.

The hybrid car (read Toyota Prius) has been around for ten years.

On the other hand the all electric car has been around pretty much since cars were invented but only recently have they been perfected as a real answer to most people's transportation needs.

So it just seems natural to wonder which technology is better, and which technology is the future.

Colorado Multisport in Boulder, Colorado hosting wildfire relief event

Editor's Note: We just received this email from our friends at Colorado Multisport in Boulder. As you know thousands of people have been forced to flee the Fourmile Canyon wildfire with perhaps hundreds of them losing their homes to the savage fire. Please help if you can, the important "how" and "when" info is below.

All of us at Colorado Multisport are shocked and saddened by the wildfire still burning in the foothills just west of Boulder.  Our hearts go out to the entire community that is affected by this tragedy, and we are in awe of the brave men and women who are risking their lives to fight the blaze. Video: Massive Boulder Colorado wildfire rages out of control as hundreds are evacuated

Editor's Note: As many of you know Boulder, Colorado (our home town) is the mecca of triathlon. The roads and foothills around Boulder offer some of the most beautiful training the runs and rides in the West that draw hundreds of amateur and pro triathletes. Today a massive wildfire fire threatens many people and homes just West of Boulder. The story is below.

A wildfire that erupted this morning just West of Boulder, Colorado has engulfed at least 3000 acres and forced the evacuation of hundreds of people.

According to local officials several hundred people have already been evacuated and numerous structures including homes have burned down to the ground. Huge plumes of smoke from the massive fire can be seen from as far away as Denver, Colorado.
