
Lance Armstrong is shinning a massive spotlight on the sport of triathlon, and that could possibly include the 2012 Ironman World Championships set for October in Kona, Hawaii this year.
"We want to investigate opportunities to be able to potentially put parts of the race live, something that has never been done in the U.S.," Messick said in an interview yesterday in San Diego, California, where he is attending the Triathlon America Business of Triathlon conference. "Lance brings a spotlight to our sport that’s brighter perhaps than anything that has ever happened."

"He's one of the guys you're going to have to go through to win the race," said Australian defending Hawaiian Ironman triathlon champion Craig Alexander in a recent interview.
Alexander went on to talk about Lance Armstrong after the seven time World Champion took second place at the IM 70.3 triathlon race in Panama this past weekend:
"He's one of the greatest endurance athletes ever, isn't he, last time I checked? Lance showed he's not mucking around."

Lance Armstrong has officially jumped into Ironman racing with both feet this year as he plans to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona by racing at least four 70.3 and one full Ironman race in 2012 as a professional triathlete.
The Seven Tour de France Champion is using this opportunity to partner with Ironman to try to raise $1 million for his cancer foundation. You can read all of the details in the press release below.

Marino Vanhoenacker of Belgium and Jodie Swallow of Great Britain won the 2012 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 in South Africa.
Vanhoenacker put together a solid swim, bike and run to cross the finsihline ahead of second place finisher Ronnie Schildknecht of Switzerland in a time of 4:06:25.
While on the women's side of the race it was all Jodie Swallow of Great Britain who lead the race from beginning to end and beat second place finisher Lucie Zelenkova of the Czech Republic in a time of 4:39:01.

In a blog post today, Chrissie Wellington has announced that she is taking a break from Ironman racing this year to, "to spend more time focusing on other pursuits including dedicating more time to my chosen charities, the publication of my book and more active promotion of the sport in the UK, as well as giving myself the chance to explore and seize new opportunities within triathlon and outside.
I feel that I wouldn’t be able to pursue all of these different goals whilst simultaneously dedicating the energy and time needed to compete in Ironman events and treat them with the respect and complete dedication they deserve."

A couple of weeks ago Chrissie Wellington went for a little run back in the U.K. to help raise awareness and money for a local charity.
