EverymanTRI.com is in Galveston, Texas to cover the Lone Star 70.3 Ironman, and as our reporter Ben Greenfield notes, the local press is all about Texas's favorite son, Lance Armstrong.
In an interview with Ironman yesterday, Lance Armstrong mentioned that "on a good day I think I can run a 1:14." Lance was speaking about the half-marathon course he'll face in tomorrow's Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas in Galveston, which IM designated as the U.S. Pro Championship. That may not be the fastest split among top-level pros, but don't forget that Lance will undoubtedly be the fastest man on the bike.
It must of been Craig Alexander's best time (7:57:44) at the this month's edition of the Melbourne Ironman that had people jumping for a crack at next year's race on the fast course. Race officials reported that the 2013 IM Melbourne to be held March 24 sold out in a record 4 minutes 57 seconds.
The women's race in Australia also produced lightning fast times with winner Caroline Steffen falling 1 minute short of the world record.
Compared to the States, triathletes down unders sold out the Melbourne race twice as fast as Ironman US Championship in New York, which was full in 11 minutes.
We went off on a tangent about nutrition and all of the choices out there a few weeks ago. EMT even posted about SIX Nutrition recently. Choices choices… Nutrition isn’t the only overwhelming aspect of triathlons and endurance racing facing today’s athlete.
Nike, Adidas, Asics and more have more running shoes to choose from than I have toes (I’m still at 10, but less on remaining toenails).

In 1941, a handful of scientists got together to create what is known as the Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA). These were considered to be sufficient to meet the requirements of 97–98% of healthy individuals in every demographic in the United States. But the reality is that active males need more than what the government of 1941 thought was adequate. Hence SIX for MEN, a vitamin supplement pack from SIX Nutrition designed specifically for highly active men.

(March 27) A Wall Street Journal story from Jennifer Corbett Dooren about a corelation between thinness and chocolate swirling around the Internets yesterday has endurance athletes and coaches touting the benefits of this ancient super food.
The article cites a study in Southern California that surveyed 1,000 adults about their eating habits and discovered that people who ate a little of the sweet stuff mutiple times a week were skinnier than those who don't. Here's the weird part: the cocoa eaters actually consumed more calories per week than those who didn't.
The findings suggest that staying trim is not just a factor of calories in, calories out, but also depends on the type of calories eaten--in this case a high-fat, high-calorie dose of antioxidant rich dark chocolate.
(March 26) A Reuters reports that Australian Emma Snowsill, the gold medal winner at the 2008 Beijing Olympics may not even make the team this year after she had to withdraw from last weekend's World Cup race in Mooloolaba in Queensland due to a stomach issue.
In a lead up to this year's summer Olympics in London, every race becomes a critical piece of the selection process. Miss too many races or withdraw from the more competitive ones, and a triathlete's chances of making their respective country's Olympic squads grow dimmer.

Saipan, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (March 24, 2012) Ben Allen and Renata Bucher made it a clean sweep of the western Pacific by capturing their third XTERRA titles in as many weeks on a blue-sky, cool breeze day at the XTERRA Saipan Championship in the Northern Marianas.
Allen was pushed hard by Olivier Marceau, a three-time Olympian for Switzerland who has won in Saipan four times. Marceau steadily erased the minute-20 gap Allen had coming out of the water by the top of the climb on the bike, then forged into the lead at the notorious cave section just passed the halfway point on the run.
“On that technical downhill section in the ravine I’ve never seen anyone run so fast. Olivier was flying and I was just trying to stay with him, pushing myself beyond my ability just to try and keep up,” said Allen.
Mooloolaba, Australia (March 24, 2012) - Frenchman Laurent Vidal claimed his first ITU World Cup win with an electrifying sprint in Mooloolaba, pipping reigning champion Brad Kahlefeldt and another Frenchman, David Hauss, in a three-way sprint to the line in the first major event of the 2012 season.
In the final of four 2.5km laps in Mooloolaba, it came to a lead group of five, Australia's Brendan Sexton was the first to lose touch with the leaders leaving Mario Mola, Vidal, Hauss and Kahlefeldt. It all came down to the final finishing chute, and Vidal said his strategy to save some energy for the final 400m had paid off.
