Firehiwot Dado of Ethiopia won the New York City Marathon after catching and passing London Marathon champ Mary Keitany in a stunning come from behind win. At one point in the race Dado was trailing Keitany by two and a half minutes.
But in the closing miles of the marathon Keitany slowed allowing both Dado and fellow Ethiopian Buzunesh Deba to catch up to the early leader.
The 27-year-old Dado won in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 23, minutes 15 seconds...which was a personal best for her by over a minute.
Buzunesh Deba crossed the line just a few seconds behind her fellow countrymen and Mary Keitany rounded out the podium in third place...24 seconds back.
At the start of the marathjon Keitany stormed to the front of the race and was well under the course record until about mile 23 after which she faded from the front allowing the two chasing women to catch and eventually pass her.
