MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Adam Otstot and Jolene Wilkinson earned overall titles in convincing fashion at the , held Saturday at the Marina Inn at Grand Dunes. Additionally, Columbia Multisport Club defended its club title from last year while Upstate Triathlon Club, Team Fraser Multisport, Myrtle Beach Tri Club and Compass Elite Lower Triathlon Squad all clinched wins in their respective divisions as part of the USA Triathlon Club National Championship.
Otstot (Williamsburg, Va.) powered to the finish, completing the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run course in 3 hours, 59 minutes, nearly eight minutes faster than the rest of the field. Representing Richmond Velo Sports, Otstot credits his victory to the team competition. "My training has been going really well and that was the goal coming in, to do the best I could for my team."
In addition to earning national titles in the long course event, the top 20 athletes in each age group (rolling down to 25th place) qualified for spots on Team USA for the 2012 ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships, which will be held in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, on July 29, 2012. More information on Team USA can be found at usatriathlon.org.
Columbia Multisport Club, which brought 60 participants from Missouri, won the club championship in Division I for the second straight year. Other club champions include Upstate Triathlon Club (Division II), Team Fraser Multisport (Division III), Myrtle Beach Tri Club (Division IV) and Compass Elite Lower Triathlon Squad (Division V). The club competition is determined in five divisions based on their membership size, and club members earned points based on their finishes in the long course, aquabike, intermediate-distance and sprint-distance events.
Bonnie Karas (Rochester, Mich.) of Division III winner Team Fraser added points to her team through the aquabike event, where she won the women's race. "It's all about the team," Karas said. "We all thrive off of each other, and watching each other out there we got stronger. I love being part of a team and having a team goal."
This was the second year this event was held in Myrtle Beach, and more than 700 athletes took part in the four events offered.
"I'm really glad I came down here," said Otstot. "This is a tremendous event. The course is well-marked and it was a great atmosphere."
