COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ten defending national champions are among the expected competitors at USA Triathlon's Aquathlon National Championship, which will be held in conjunction with the America's Cup Aquathlon in Longmont, Colo., on
All competitors will complete a 1,500-meter swim followed by a 5-kilometer run at Union Reservoir. Visit usatriathlon.org for more information on the event or the multisport discipline of aquathlon, which features running and swimming.
Returning champions from last year's event in San Ramon, Calif., set to defend their titles in 2011 include:
· Pieter deHart (30-34, Lexington, Va.)
· Erika Binger (35-39, Minneapolis, Minn.)
· Jaime Balboa (40-44, Los Angeles, Calif.)
· Tim Waid (45-49, Columbia, Mo.)
· Janet Jarvits (45-49, Pasadena, Calif.)
· Daniel Wirls (50-54, Santa Cruz, Calif.)
· Peter Harvey (55-59, Piedmont, Calif.)
· Elaine Morison (50-54, Lafayette, Calif.)
· Jackie Yukawa (60-64, Pasadena, Calif.)
· Sarah Ingersoll (65-69, Pasadena, Calif.)
Additionally, Saturday's field includes four medalists from the 2010 ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Budapest - female 55-59 gold medalist Susan Griffin-Kaklikian (Castle Rock, Colo.); Wirls, who won silver; and bronze medalists deHart and Andrew Farrell (40-44, Orlando, Fla.).
In addition to chasing national titles, athletes also will be competing for spots on Team USA for the 2011 ITU Aquathlon World Championships in Beijing on Sept. 7. The top 10 finishers in each age group, rolling down to 14th place, will be eligible for a Team USA berth. Team USA is comprised of amateur athletes who represent the United States at each ITU World Championship event
