2010 Wildflower Triathlon video report: call of the wet and wild

Sometimes the name says it all...like Wildflower.

You except things to be wild at Lake San Antonio in the middle of the rough and ready wildness in California but perhaps not this wild?

Our correspondent and triathlete, Ben Greenfield, is racing and reporting from this year's Wildflower Triathlon and he's just filed this second Wild Flower Triathlon video report.

Lance Armstrong expecting Cinco in October: His second child with girlfriend Anna Hansen

Cinco Armstrong...that's an unusual name, but for now that's what Lance Armstrong and his girlfriend Anna Hansen are calling their second child together.

Cinco may also be the youngest Twitter user ever as the little belly bound baby, who is due in October, already has a Twitter account and almost 1500 followers at http://twitter.com/Cincoarmstrong

"I'm now the size of a lemon, 3.5 inches long, and weigh 1.5 ounces. And oh yeah, I'm on Twitter," Cinco Armstrong recently twitter. 

Are you ready to Escape from Alcatraz?

Editor's Note: Our San Francisco correspondent and triathlete Ben Klau is getting ready to once again Escape from Alcatraz. He sent us this pre-race report.

For the first time in weeks, the seven day forecast for San Francisco contains no rain, and that includes what look to be ideal race weather, a low of 51 and a high of 75, for the 30th Escape from Alcatraz triathlon being held this Sunday.

For almost 30-years triathletes have gathered on the shores of Lake San Antonio in California for the annual Wildflower Triathlon Festival and this year is certainly no different.

Imagine a race that tests endurance, strength and stamina, but that's not timed and racers are encouraged...no make that sworn...to help each other.

A race that's not about how long it takes to finish, but the stories that you have to tell after you cross the finish line while enjoying a beer with your buddies.

A race that's being held this Sunday near a ski resort near Allentown, Pa. And a race that is already twice as big as an Ironman in terms of the number of people racing.

You see a title like “LA Triathlon Series” and images of traffic-filled city bike routes and a runs with industrial scenery probably come to mind. Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The LA Tri Series takes place in a lush, green natural setting hidden from any city congestion. The site is Bonelli Park in San Dimas—about 45 miles east of Santa Monica (read: no ocean swim for those who seek calm waters in SoCal).

Exercise and Alzheimer's disease: the jury is still out but some see direct benefits

Let's cut to the chase: In general, doctors and scientist believe that the stuff that's good for your heart, like exercise and a healthy diet, is also good for your brain.

But a panel convened by the National Institutes of Health recently warned that jury is still out on what you can actually do to prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

In other words, the panel warned that there is little evidence that vitamin and dietary supplements, and doing mental gymnastics like crossword puzzles has any beneficial prevention upside when it comes to  Alzheimer's disease.

Paul Martin sets sights on Comrades Marathon for needy Kenyan kids

Editor's Note: We just got this email from our friend Paul Martin who will be running the very challenging Comrades Marathon at the end of next month. We'll follow Paul for the next few weeks as he gets ready for the run of his life.

On May 30 I'll be joining the likes of Josh Cox, Bart Yasso, Andy Baldwin and 14 other members of Team World Vision tackle Comrades Marathon, the original ultra-marathong known as "The Ultimate Human Race."

This 56-mile run will no doubt be one of the toughest competitions of my life. Tougher than Ironman, tougher than a four-day adventure race, tougher than living with a wife who gave birth to two babies during her Harvard anesthesiology residency!

Could it be carnage on the streets of St. George as inaugural Ironman racers face cold and rain?

About 58 degrees...that's the current water temperature in the reservoir that will host this weekend's inaugural Ironman in St. George Utah.

But that's just the beginning of the cold and wet news for all of the athletes competing at this weekend's Ironman race in Utah.

The weather conditions also look dicey with possible showers and a low of 47 degrees and a high of 69 degrees.

Lexus introduces new hybrid concept and guess what? It's an all-wheel drive bike

 

The newest Lexus is certainly a hybrid but not the kind that you would except.

It does have an electric motor but don't spend a lot of time looking for the missing two wheels and of course the gasoline powered engine.

This newest Lexus concept bike is an electric/human power hybrid that's powered by a 240-Watt electric motor and a 25.9-volt lithium battery pack...and of course the rider.

Deena Kastor struggles with cramps to battle hard day at the London Marathon

It took Deena Kastor two days to get to the London Marathon because of volcano related travel hassles and by the look on her face at the end of the race you might wonder if the day's run was really worth the trip.

The American womens marathon record holder and winner of the 2006 London Marathon battled cramps, tightness, and allergies to finish in 18th place with one of her slowest marathon runs ever in a time of 2:36:20.

Cycling with a yard stick is certainly one interesting way to make a point about bike safety

We're not sure that strapping a yard stick to the side of your bike is the safest way to make the point that drivers should give a three foot clearance to cyclist...but you can't argue that it is effective.

Recently these cyclist from the Mt Washington Valley Velo Club certainly demonstrated in the most visual manner of all how far three feet really is...at least when put to a real life test on the road.

Joanna Zeiger comes to grips with fantasy vs. reality in Galveston, Texas

Editor's Note: Trenzo Bozzone (NZL) and Samantha McGlone (CAN) won the inaugural Ironman 70.3 U.S. Pro Championship in Galveston, Texas yesterday. But toeing the start line was our Boulder, Colorado based friend and super fast pro triathlete Joanna Zeiger. Her race day did not go as planned. But Joanna proves in her latest blog entry that sometimes you can learn more from a DNF than from a victory. Her race report is below...as posted to her most excellent blog Fast at Forty. 

Yesterday’s race did not unfold as planned. Who really ever plans not to finish? But, if I am being honest with myself and to you, the outcome was not entirely surprising.
