This latest version with its cutting-edge performance allows you to access information without breaking your stride, giving you the edge when every second counts. TapScreen Technology logs split times with one firm tap on the watch face. Glancing at the over-sized display, or listening to the audible alarms then provides real-time performance feedback.
Of course weight is the enemy of performance when it comes to endurance sports so it might come as no surprise to you that a new study has found that "bingeing on
high-calorie foods may be as addictive as cocaine or nicotine, and could
cause compulsive eating and obesity, according to recent Reuters story.
"Obesity may be a form of compulsive eating.
Other treatments in development for other forms of compulsion, for
example drug addiction, may be very useful for the treatment of
obesity," researcher Paul Kenny of The Scripps Research Institute in
Florida said.
You may recall from THIS story that professional triathlete Jordan Rapp suffered severe life threatening injuries after a hit and run bike accident in California left him on the road in a pool of blood fighting for his life.
Today we learned that Rapp might have died had it not been for the fast first aid of a Navy Seabee preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.
Chief Petty Officer Thomas Sanchez called upon his 16-years of Naval experience to save Rapp's life.
467,000..that's the number of estimated finishers and runners who completed a marathon last year.
10 percent...that's the total annual increase of runners finishing a marathon from the previous year
Sold Out...that's what happened at most big city marathons in 2009.
You can read the complete press release below or click HERE to see a very interesting break down of the 2009 numbers by age, gender, and most perhaps most interesting of all---the fastest medium times by marathon (which, by the way, seem to be dropping).
Imagine what would happen in the United States if House Minority Leader John Boehner finished an Ironman this weekend.
Do you suppose the voting public and the political pundits would be impressed or upset?
Because that's exactly what happened this weekend in Australia as Australia’s new opposition leader Tony Abbott finished Ironman Australia in under 14-hours.
And sure enough his impressive athletic accomplishment has sparked a massive debate in Australia as Reuters reports.
Editor's Note: Our friend Paul Shippey will soon be running his dream race in Boston, but he's not just doing it for himself. Paul's also raising money to help the orphans in Haiti. His story and reason for running are below:
The earthquake that devastated Haiti continues to bring untold suffering and misery to the people of Haiti, and in particular, the orphan population which more than quadrupled overnight!
I have been fortunate to have first hand contact with some newly adopted children through my friend Elizabeth Dowling, whose newly adopted daughter Jenna, was featured on CNN shortly after the quake struck! ( CNN video links below)
Vancouver, 28 March 2010 - It was a great start to the 2010 World Cup season for reigning ITU Duathlon World Champion Vendula Frintova of the Czech Republic. Frintova took home the title here in Mooloolaba today, narrowly outpacing Japan's Tomoko Sakimoto and Great Britain's Liz Blatchford.
A little cloud cover gave the elite women a bit of a break from the hot conditions that have hung over Mooloolaba all week, but a stiff breeze made for plenty of chop in the Ocean as the women started their swim. American veteran Laura Bennett immediately charged to the front of the pack, accompanied by countrywoman Sarah Groff, Britain's Liz Blatchford and Aussie Felicity Sheedy-Ryan.
Both German Michael Raelert and Australian Mirinda Carfrae made it look easy.
The two won the 2010 Rohto Ironman 70.3 California with minutes to spare.
Raelert, the current 70.3 World Champion, continued his domination of the half Ironman distance by winning the race after jumping into the lead on the bike.
"I hope a made a name of myself on the bike today," said
Raelert. "A lot of people thought I was a one-day wonder. I was
happy that I was able to prove myself, really happy to get the
respect."
Vancouver, 27 March 2010 - Brad Kahlefeldt was victorious on his home turf today, earning the first World Cup title of the 2010 season in Mooloolaba. Kahlefeldt finished just ten seconds ahead of Great Britain's Stuart Hayes, who put on a late charge to finish second. Aussie youngster James Seear finished in third, 16 seconds back of Hayes, after leading for the majority of the race.
High surf throughout the week leading up to the race gave way to calm Ocean conditions on race day, making for a quick swim. Leading the way out of the water was New Zealand's Dylan McNeice, with a big group of approximately 20 athletes right on his heels. McNeice exited the swim in 18:18, with Josh Amberger and Seear just a few seconds behind.
Isn't that really the question that's at the heart of expensive triathlon gear.
Our contributing writer, Danny Ward (England's Ironman Chef) of (TriSport Epping), recently took a stab at answering this perplexing question.
Speedsuit
In a study, published just last year in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, researchers took 8 triatheltes and compared a swim brief, basically a Speedo, to a modern speed suit.
