Women's triathlons are all the rage these days. So I've put together some
insider tips for you to rock your race at the next all-female event. Dudes -
feel free to read and pass these tips on to your wife, girlfriend, mom or
sister. Heck, you might even be able to use a few of the tips yourself. Just
don't don a skirt and try to sneak into the race.
Women's Triathlon Insider Tip 1.
A women's triathlon will most likely
consist of a wave start, which means that you'll leave with smaller group of
other women in your age category. Some people think that wave starts tend to
be a bit less brutal than a mass start, but I beg to differ. It only takes a
half-dozen women swimming in your space to make you feel like you're in a
washing machine.
Every year the snow lovers of the world, or at least those who equip the snow lovers of the word, gather at the annual SIA Snow Show.
This year, instead of Las Vegas, the show moved to its new home in Denver, Colorado.
Think all of the skis, snowboards, and clothes that you need to take on the winter and multiply it by a factor of 100 and you've got the beginnings of the SIA Snow Show.
Don't get us wrong we love the fact that both Radio Shack and Nissan are sponsoring Lance Armstrong's Pro bike team...we just don't understand why.
From a business point of view it seems to make very little sense as this recent editorial in the investment web site Alpha Found points out:
"Despite nearly half a year having passed since the sponsorship announcement, there is no evidence of “Team RadioShack” on the company’s consumer or investor relations Web sites, nor in the stores we visited.
Orbea USA is proud to announce that Craig Alexander has re-signed
with both the Orbea and Orca brands for the next six years. “Crowie is
the top triathlete in the world, winning the 2008 and 2009 Kona Ironman
World Championships, 2006 Ironman 70.3 World Championship and countless
other premier global triathlons since turning professional in 2004. We
are honored to have Crowie as the face of the Orbea and Orca brands in
the sport of Triathlon” says Tony Karklins, Managing Director of Orbea
USA.
Kara Goucher is having a busy new year.
Not only does she appear on the March cover or Runner's World Magazine but she's getting involved in the triathlon world...sort of.
OK, to be fair she's leading a run at the upcoming Triathlon Expo in San Diego this weekend. According to Competitor.com two-day event will host an impressive lineup of world-class athletes including:
The controversy over barefoot running just got more interesting as a new study in the journal Nature has just found that running without shoes has expected and unexpected benefits.
One shouldn’t be scared of barefoot or minimal shoe running or think it
odd,” said study coauthor Daniel Lieberman of Harvard University. “From
an evolutionary perspective, it’s normal and, if done properly, it is
very fun and comfortable. We evolved to run barefoot.”
A lot of questions remain after the recent Tour Down Under but Lance Armstrong is pretty confident about his 2010 Tour de France chance of winning.
“I think I can win the Tour again. I might be a fool to think that but I’m going to go down my foolish way and find out,” said the 38-year-old Texan. "It’s going to be the hardest one to win. The competition is better than it ever has been before,” he added.
To many insiders and cycling observers Armstrong looked fitter at this year's Tour Down Under than at last year's race in Australia.
Apparently an hour or two of strength training exercises per week is all it takes to improve your mind...if you are an older woman.
A recent study done by researchers in British Columbia found that older women who exercised using strength training (free weights) or exercised their muscles (using weight machines) improved their mental prowess by 10.9 percent to 12.6 percent.
"Researchers in British Columbia randomly assigned 155 women ages 65 to
75 either to strength training with dumbbells and weight machines once
or twice a week, or to a comparison group doing balance and toning
exercises."
So your A race is in just a few weeks, and you have to spend most of that time traveling for work.
Or...you are finally starting to get the feel for the water when it is vacation time and you won't see a pool or your masters class for the next two week.
Who says that skiing is safer than cycling...probably not Bob Roll.
Long time cyclist, Versus.com color commentator, and Colorado resident Bob Roll is in the hospital after a weekend skiing accident left him with a broken femur and three broken ribs.
"
Just chatted with Bob Roll about his ski crash on Saturday where broke his femur (!!) and 3 ribs. He's still in the hospital.
During the call Bob was in good spirits but still in pain...obviously. He has had a steel rod inserted in his femur and expects to be in the hospital for a few more days.
You know that when two stars of the now defunct Mad TV decide to train for a triathlon to raise money for restless leg syndrome the results will be anything but boring.
In this youtube.com clip Bobby and Crista of Mad TV decide that they need to swim 1 mile, bike 56 mile, and run 13.1 miles (all withing an hour) to help Bobby train for his triathlon to raise money for restless leg syndrome.
It's one of those races that seems to get the best athletes in the sport of triathlon.
And 2010 is no exception as Ironman champ Chrissie Wellington has just confirmed her intention to defend last year's win at the the K-Swiss Ironman 70.3 Kansas Triathlon.
"Kansas 70.3 has everything I look for
in a race: a strong pro field; a beautiful, challenging course; heaps
of enthusiastic spectators; dedicated support for charitable causes and
an awesome, vibrant community spirit," Wellington said.
Who would have thought that a political campaign can be just like a sprint triathlon, but according to the newly minted junior senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown, that's exactly what it is.
"I treated this campaign like a sprint triathlon,” Brown recently told the New York Times. “You have to be good in everything, 18, 19 hours a
day. We were just out there cranking.”
Perhaps a better analogy might be an Ironman triathlon Scott, especially if you plan on a 18 to 19 hour day...just saying.
ZenTri Base Camp was a great opportunity to sit down and discuss how Zen can be applied to triathlon training and racing. This recording covers the full spectrum; Letting go, fear, gear, leaning into difficulties, and much, much more.
The talk was given as one of many efforts to teach campers to step back and reassess their training early in the season. We spent a lot of time undoing the knots many of us get twisted in after years of being hammered with other people's ideas about how to train and what being healthy means.
