Every year on Memorial Day some of the fastest runners in the world take on the Bolder Boulder 10K race.
This year 53,119 runners registered to run the second largest road race in America in Boulder, Colorado.
Out of all of those runners, professional triathletes Matthew Reed and Chrissie Wellington took top ten places in the elite citizens race.
According to the unofficial results 33-year-old Olympic triathlete Matthew Reed finished in 10th place in a time of 32:19 on what is regarded as a very difficult 10K race at altitude.
32-year-old Ironman World Champion Chrissie Wellington out did Reed in the Women's elite citizens race with an unofficial time of 37:02.
Reed had posted the following comments on his twitter page a few days ago as he tried to qualify for the elite A wave of the 31st annual Bolder Boulder.
"Just paid 50
bucks to run the local Boulder Boulder. Said I was an Olympian she
didn't believe I still had to prove I could run under 38 min."
Athletes must prove that they are capable of running a sub 38 minute time either on a treadmill at the Bolder Boulder store or from a previous race results to run in the A wave.
Today Reed seemed happy with his results when he wrote on his twitter page:
"Okay Hard course
I forgot how hard!! 32.10 or so But struggled the whole way. Was happy
with effort but not time. 16.03 at 5km so even pace"
Both Reed and Wellington now live and train in Boulder, Colorado. Reed in originally from New Zealand and Wellington is British.
